Matepani Gumba – Pokhara, Nepal

In terms of the travel and tourism sector, Pokhara holds a significant position as the epicenter and heart of our beautiful and peaceful country, Nepal. This majestic and heavenly city has become a must-visit destination for both domestic and international tourists. With its stunning lakeside views, bustling marketplaces, thrilling adventure sports, lively restaurants and clubs, and luxurious hotels, Pokhara offers a diverse range of experiences. It is also home to various pilgrimage sites, temples, and monasteries, providing a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. One such place of interest is the Matepani Monastery, also known as the Matepani Gumba.

The Matepani Monastery, located in Pokhara’s Kaski District near the Kundahar region, sits atop a small green hill approximately five kilometers northeast of Pokhara city. It was founded in 1960 A.D. by the Nyeshang monks who had relocated from Manang to Pokhara. Experiencing the monks’ daily prayer practice is a unique and unforgettable experience for tourists. As you build a connection with the monks and become closer to them, you may even be invited to participate in their ceremonies. The main prayer hall of the monastery holds multiple prayer sessions throughout the day.

In addition to their daily prayers, the monks also perform specific rituals that exude peace, tranquility, and a sense of calmness, which last the entire day. Inside the Matepani Gumba, the intricate artwork portrays various episodes from the life of Buddha and depicts diverse legends that form the foundation of the Buddhist faith, leaving visitors in awe. The beautiful sculptures, including the monument of Lord Buddha and other 11-foot-tall statues, will undoubtedly captivate your attention.

The history of Matepani Gumba dates back to Lama Jigme and a group of Nyeshang devotees traveling to Sikkim in 1959 to meet His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, Ranjung Rigpe Dorje, to discuss Nyeshang in Nepal. His Holiness instructed Lama Jigme to establish monasteries in Pokhara. Matepani was chosen as an auspicious location, as it was believed that the swords used by King Ling Derma to defeat evil kings in Tibet were lost there. It was also prophesied that the monastery’s establishment would bring immense benefits to future generations of monks and Buddhism followers. Thus, the Matepani Gumba in the beautiful city of Pokhara came into existence.

To reach the monastery, you can take local transportation through Mahendrapul via Kahukhola. Taxis or private cars can also be arranged. However, be aware that the steep hill may pose challenges for two-wheelers, requiring a short trek to reach the destination. Admission to the Gumba is free, and the trek is rewarding as it offers breathtaking views of Pokhara and Mt. Machapuchare (Mt. Fishtail). Upon arrival, you will receive a warm welcome from the kind monks, creating a serene atmosphere away from the noise and busyness of city life.

Matepani Monastery is an excellent choice if you seek tranquility and wish to visit a sacred site while in Pokhara. The serene location, well-maintained garden, and the opportunity to witness the monks’ afternoon worship provide a fulfilling experience for all visitors. Nepal’s monasteries, regardless of their size, always emanate a sense of peace and beauty that is difficult to put into words. And of course, Pokhara, with its heavenly natural beauty and rich cultural and religious heritage, is among the best destinations in Nepal. Don’t miss the chance to visit the peaceful and serene Matepan

Thank you !!!
